Double Knitting 101

Learn how to knit two sides at the same time! With this skill, you can make reversible hats and bags, create pockets, and make other unique features. In the class, you will learn the basics of double knitting while making a small bag or eye glass case. You'll learn how to make an I-cord strap, how to read stitches as front or back, public versus non-public, as well as the beginnings of mirror knitting.

Prerequisite Skills: Basic knitting skills (knit, purl, cast-on/bind-off)
Key Techniques Taught:
- A traditional long tail cast on
- How to double knit
- What side is this - public or non-public?
- Did I drop a stitch?
- What row am I on?
- Where am I in the pattern?
- How to make I-cord handles
- How to detect and fix problems
- How to use Magic Loop to knit in the round
- How to use multiple colored yarns
- How to bind off sections of knitted rows
- (Optional) how to felt your bag
Materials:
- One skein of worsted weight or larger yarn in a light color
- Another skein (same weight) in a contrasting color
- Appropriate needles (see yarn label and select smallest recommended size). Needles may be straight or double pointed or circular. We will be knitting in the round. We will be creating a very dense fabric. If you are not sure about which needle size to use, bring extra needles). It would be helpful to have all three types (straight, double pointed and circular).
- (Optional) If you want to felt your bag, be sure to select yarns that will felt (80% or more natural wool).
Class Size: Maximum of six students.
Cost: $ $30.00 for all three sessions (6 hours of instruction)
